Biography

Looking back, I suppose marketing has always been in my blood. At the age of 12 my Boy Scout troop held a fundraiser selling take n’ bake style pizzas from a local parlor to help us get to Scout Camp. Putting the full court press on family members and my parent’s coworkers I sold through my allotment in the first day and then proceeded to help my troop-mates sell their quotas to make sure Troop 350 was well represented.

At 14 I started helping with the seasonal harvest work on my friend’s farm. I made $3.15 per hour carrying paint buckets filled with onions and corn across the field for sorting. On the weekends my friend’s Dad let us take the left over harvest from that week and sell corn and onions on the side of the road. We got to split 50% of the profits between us. That experience taught me the value of hard work and an honest wage. After the harvest season I figured I’d start my own mobile car wash. I printed flyers and business cards and started canvasing door to door for clients.

At 19, my father decided to start his own office furniture company. I was already selling office furniture and supplies so I decided to join him. As a small, family operated business I learned just how many hats a small business owner has to wear in one day. I was tasked with keeping up the sales and marketing efforts for the company and was forced to quickly learn everything I could about marketing and advertising. It was this time in my life that I truly developed a passion for the marketing industry.

After leaving the family business, I worked for a prominent Fortune 100 level technology company where I was part of a team that received numerous sales, design and advertising awards. But my heart was always back with the small business arena so after 4 years I left the company.

In 2009 I started copy-ology: the web content company providing content marketing and copywriting services to webmasters. In 2011, I merged copy-ology and launched CookWheelwright together with my wife.

Personal Life

Like most small business owners I don’t find much spare time, but I enjoy spending those free moments with my wife and 3 amazing kids (Ty, AJ, and Jayden). Admittedly I’m a big ASU fan and you can catch me most Saturday evenings at Sun Devil stadium during football season. I also love hockey and try to attend as many Phoenix Coyotes NHL games as possible. Most of my activities are ones that involve the whole family so we tend to enjoy a lot of camping, trips to nearby San Diego and beach, and spending time on my parent’s ranch in Wyoming when we have the time.

In 2007 I married the most amazing girl in the world, my best friend, and my current business partner Erica. Like many of the small businesses we serve, our company is centered around family; stop by the offices and you might even find one of our team member’s kids perched at the receptionist desk playing on clubpenguin or someone’s pet dog guarding the break room door. After all, when you spend 90% of your life at work – why not share it with the ones you care about most!
